- Determine your budget and obtain necessary financing.
- Hire a qualified architect with experience in renovation and addition projects.
- Hire a licensed general contractor with experience in renovations and/or additions. Contact your local
registrar of contractors to confirm licensure and status. Ask to see completed projects and a list of references -
take the time to speak with several who had projects similar to your own . Be sure to get a detailed written contract
and copies of their liability and workers comp insurance.
- If you don't have an existing set of plans, you will need to have your architect create one.
This will be used to make sure that your additions/renovations blend in properly with your original structure,
and then to create a demolition plan for the removal of existing items that will need to be relocated or removed.
- Once the designs are complete, your architect will prepare a set of construction drawings,
which your contractor will use as a guide to build your project.
- If you are acting as your own general contractor, make sure to apply with your city and state
governments for necessary sales tax permits and any other licensure or permits that may be required in your area.
Get detailed price quotes from all subcontractors. Before any work begins have signed agreements
that include all costs, a timeline for work to be performed, and a payment schedule.
