Planning, even for a large remodeling project, doesn't have to be overwhelming if you approach it methodically. We've put together a list to help you get off to a good start on your next project.
  • Determine your budget and obtain necessary financing.
  • Hire a qualified architect with experience in renovation and addition projects.
  • Hire a licensed general contractor with experience in renovations and/or additions. Contact your local registrar of contractors to confirm licensure and status. Ask to see completed projects and a list of references - take the time to speak with several who had projects similar to your own . Be sure to get a detailed written contract and copies of their liability and workers comp insurance.
  • If you don't have an existing set of plans, you will need to have your architect create one. This will be used to make sure that your additions/renovations blend in properly with your original structure, and then to create a demolition plan for the removal of existing items that will need to be relocated or removed.
  • Once the designs are complete, your architect will prepare a set of construction drawings, which your contractor will use as a guide to build your project.
  • If you are acting as your own general contractor, make sure to apply with your city and state governments for necessary sales tax permits and any other licensure or permits that may be required in your area. Get detailed price quotes from all subcontractors. Before any work begins have signed agreements that include all costs, a timeline for work to be performed, and a payment schedule.
  • No matter how well thought out your plan is, there are almost always unexpected costs and last minute changes that take extra time. Be sure that you are prepared to spend more time and money than your original plans called for.
  • When your project is complete, get the owner's manuals and warranties for all of the products that were installed and keep them along with the contact information for subcontractors who worked on your project. Make sure that they give you any product demonstrations that are needed to operate and maintain new appliances, fixtures, flooring, etc.

When you start your remodeling project we hope that you will tell your designer or contractor that you want R. Bailey Electric, Inc. to handle all of your electrical needs.
